Default Proving that a person has no dependants

A will states that the person's son gets all of her assets, and if the son dies before she does, then the son's legal dependants get all of the assets, and if there are none, then the assets go to a named cousin. The son died 2 years before she did. He was never married and to our knowledge never had children. We can prove the son's death by a death certificate but how can we prove there were no children.
