EEK! What if someone steals &/or distroys a will?

My grandmother is 90. A family member who has "assumed" her POA claims not to know where the will is. Has had a new will drawn up for signing. My grandmother has moderate senile dementia. Good days & bad days. On days when she understands things, she clearly states that everything she has left is to be divided. On bad days, she would sign over her house and everything to any stranger who asked her to sign papers. Is there anywhere that her will would have been recorded? It was drawn up by a lawyer and witnessed. We are in NC. I am trying to avoid an all out legal battle with part of the family.
Thanks for any info.

The original lawyer would have a copy--did she have counsel?

She had counsel, however this was about 20 yrs. ago. We have been told that the lawyer only keeps records going back 7 yrs. Do wills get registered anywhere else & who can find out this information?

As that what the lawyer said? He would normally keep wills forever.

Question Re: What if someone steals &/or distroys a will?

Hi...Just wanted to say, I also live in NC...if a will is drawn up by an attorney, isn't it also on file with the Register of Deeds? Thats what I've been told?
