i am the custodial stepparent to my stepchildren, ages 3-14( my husband died of cardiac arrest feb 24) if something were to happen to me, could i designate family friends to be the kids gaurdian if i were to pass away? if i were to pass away after the oldest turns 18, could i appoint him the legal guardian to his siblings? several of them have grandparents in other states, and im afraid they'll be seperated. that wouldnt be what their father would have wanted, he would have wanted them to stay together

Yes you can do that; we would suggest you have legal counsel help document it so that there would not be any potential challenge to it. The cost should only be a hew hundred dollars or so and you can even seek a fixed fee when setting it up.
