Default Is a wife's home protected when husband dies without a new will?

If a widower does not make a new will when remarries where does the wife stands should he passes away. Does she inherits their home which was built while they were tog altho it is in his name only & he had a will made years ago in UK. Despite of the fact that the wife worked & contributed in the home & lifestyle loses her home if his children from first marriage contest or claim the property?
