underlying sentence
What does it mean when someone receives an "underlying sentence"? What exactly does that term mean?

it may be that the crime was part of the greater charge that was made against you |

This is about someone whose sentence was stated as "18 months probation with an underlying sentence of 14 months". I didn't know if this meant that anytime during probation if they broke probation they would go to jail for 14 months, or if they would go to jail for 14 months and then receive 18 months probation.
