Default Speaking for someone prior to sentencing

This is probably a unique question. What, if any, is the procedure for gaining the opportunity to speak on the behalf of a inmate serving time in a treatment center for women. She plead guilty and rightly so.

I am not, nor have I ever been, material to the case. I did not even know she had been arrested until several months after the conviction and sentence. I would now like to address the sentencing judge on her behalf.

Is there a procedure for doing this, or is it merely a matter of writing to the judge directly? I'd love to help this person. I've known her for a long time and I can put many things into perspective that her public defender simply could not.

The reason I was never called in for the initial trial is because we had lost touch for about 4-years prior to all of this taking place. She didn't want to "bother" me with it.

She sent me a letter as part of her treatment, which has now brought me back into her life, for which I am grateful. I would never have considered her contacting me as "bothering" me.

Thank you.

You may write the judge and/or have her counsel arrange for you to speak as a witness, reference or something similar.
