Remember that you will need money while you’re in prison. Ten dollars a week should be enough for toiletries, snacks, stamps, etc. Some prison systems have discontinued smoking, but if you are a smoker and intend to continue to smoke, you will need more.

Prepare yourself mentally for prison. The sooner that you start this process, the better off you will be. Prison is often a violent and stressful place. You will suffer blows to your dignity such as strip searches, threats, and you will be treated as if you don’t have enough sense to blow your nose without being told.

You will be told when to sleep, when to get up, when to eat, what to eat, where you can go, and what to wear. All of the little things that you took for granted are now privileges and subject to suspension.

Any positive thing that you manage to drag out of that place will be because you decided to make something positive happen. You have to make it happen. The word “Rehabilitation” doesn’t exist in there except in theory, so you must be prepared mentally.

If you can, prepare yourself physically. Prisons are full of inmates who are in great shape. I have only seen a few prison where weight training equipment was not available. A prison is like a little community in itself. Power is often measured by brute force, not by intelligence. Respect is only given once it is earned. This activity will also serve to help you fit in, because now you will have something in common with many others.

Prisoners have access to the Internet and public chat forums, etc.

It's difficult to deprive prisoners of basic rights because of the U. S. Constitution. Even in prison, people have the exact same constitutional rights as those who are not in prison, so they get the Internet. In some prisons a free education and cable TV is available.

I suppose that the Internet is a basic human right to some prison systems.

People obviously don't have the same rights in prison as they do in society. They're in prison. They can't have a job, earn income, have unauthorized personal possessions, they're on a strict schedule with a set bedtime. They are granted the most basic human rights, a (relatively) comfortable place to sleep, proper nutrition, and enough recreation time to not go insane and stay relatively healthy. IF they happen to have internet access, it's brief, tightly controlled, and probably directly monitored by a guard.
