A furlough is a procedure to release a convicted felon from prison. The felon must serve a minimum amount of time on his sentence (varies from state to state). Then a request is sent to the judge to ask for a furlough. If granted, the inmate is released from prison and put on probation. Sometimes he will have to go to a furlough or half-way house for a period prior to returning home. There are rules for the furlough that he must follow (vary by the crime and the judge). They can include staying gainfully employed, going to counselling or therapy, reporting regularly to his probation officer, having no positive test results for drugs or alcohol, and staying out of any further trouble with the law. If the inmate violated the rules of his furlough, he is returned to prison to complete his sentence. This is somewhat akin to shock probation.
