Need Help Creating A Motion For Continuance (For Trial Extension)

Hey I just came across this forum and thought I may ask this here. My trial is coming up on Feb 19 for a first-time Marijuana charge and I was two days late to apply for a public defender. Instead of waiting until the trial date to request an extension to find representation, I was told my other option was to "bring a letter to the court clerk as soon as possible". I tried looking online for sample formats of the letter but I didn't get much straight-forward help. Can anyone help me out as far as how to format it, what information to include, etc. I live in Maryland in case that makes a difference.
