Default Do I need a Lawyer?

I have been charged with 2 misdemeanors. Assault#3 and Threats and intimidation#1.
I was short paid after leaving my job, and challenged the boss about it.
I did a lot of shouting and swearing but didn't hit anyone.
My boss has a witness and they both say I shook him violently with both hands and threatened to kill him.
My Son was outside and didn't hear me threaten him with violence.
I have a Court date in 3 weeks. Can I just plead not guilty and hope the Judge is leniant, or should I go to the expense of a Lawyer?
It is my first offence in my 44 Years of living in the UK and US.
Many thanks.

This is a very complicate case, thus you need the best attorney on your side.
