Default Witnesses Subpoena'd/No Show

My juvenile son is facing an assualt charge. The three witnesses for the prosecution did not show although, according to our attorney, they had been subpoena'd. He told us that they get "one free pass" and did not have to show up the first time, but if they no-showed the second time, they would be held in comtempt. I've never heard of anything like this. I thought that if you were served, you were required to show. Can you help me understand what's going on here?
(This is in Collin County, Texas)

You are required to show but if you don't then the lawyers have to have another hearing to seek contempt charges.

So usually they try one more time to get them to show, and to see if they possibly had any good reason for not showin.
