Exclamation Meaning of 'to reserve defence'?

In the murder case of Major vs Crown (UK) in 1934, a newspaper reported that the defence lawyer 'said that the defendant pleaded not guilty and reserved her defence'. Does this mean he did not call any witnesses for her? Thank you.
