My friend was visiting in Santa Barbara, Isla Vista specifically. Some friends got in an argument with her, so she walked out the door to go down the street to meet someone else, the problem was she had about a quarter full beer bottle in her hand. She got a citation for it, and thus the MIP. She is 19 and has no priors, a totally clean record. I have read there are ways via pre trial diversion to get the charged dropped to something like disturbing the peace, having to pay the fine for that, and also attending some type of alcohol class which first time offenders are eligible for. My question is, how do we (Im helping my friend with this all) go about brining this about. Is it possible without legal counsel in court, or is there anything else she needs to do? Don't worry. I had a minor in consumption and all they did was make me pay a fine. No counsil needed.

That may not be true everywhere. If a civil fine/ticket etc. is not able to be agreed in advance consider having counsel help clear that up--and to keep it off your record.
