PLEASE Need Immediate Advice-DUI First Offense

I was arrested for DUI--first offense 3/25/08, bonded myself out and I am
required to show up to court for arraignment within (10) calendar days. I
have a completely clean record and I am even a graduate from law school (not
licensed to practice yet). I have lived in Ingham County for over (8) years
and have held a decent job for over a year and a half. More or less I could
be cosidered a model citizen prior to this indiscretion. My question is that
I know I can plea this offense down to an impaired driving misdemeanor (vs
DUI) however I would desperately like to do anything possible to avoid having
this on my record all together so I want to know if I could speak to the
prosecutor at my pre-lim and (e.g) request he agree to suggest to the judge
that my sentencing be held in abeyance for up to a certain time pending
successful completion of probation or (e.g.) request that I participate in
some diversion program (comparable to the one used in first offense drug cases--711?)
in lieu of having this placed on my record if I successfully complete the
program? I am utterly embarrassed over this and need some advice ASAP.
Please advise as to whether there is a way to avoid having an impaired

Make sure you get legal counsel (or at least the public defender) to try to keep this off your record eventually--jail time is not likely if your record is clear now. But having that arrest and/or a conviction on your record could make job-hunting etc. more difficult. Often this could be negotiated down to some kind of court supervision etc. If it eventually appears it cannot be negotiated down, please let us know...
