Default Driving with expired license and registration

I would appreciate any help/reassurance as I'm pretty distraught right now.

I am a Massachusetts resident who was pulled over on the highway in Worcester, MA for speeding (82 in a 65). Both my license and my registration had been expired for about 3 months. The reason why I hadn't renewed them was because I had outstanding parking tickets that I couldn't afford to pay at the time. My car was towed and the cop gave me a ticket for a hearing that I needed to sign and mail to the court and they would respond with a hearing date.

This all happened on Saturday. Monday, I took care of all my parking tickets and got both my license and my registration renewed. I also promptly mailed in the hearing ticket.

I'm worried because I checked Massachusetts General Law (Chapter 90, Section 10) and it claims that driving without a valid license is punishable with a fine from $500-$1000, or 10 days in prison, or both. I am willing to pay whatever fine the judge imposes at the hearing (I realize that this is all my own fault) but I'm terrified at the prospect of going to jail and having a criminal record over something this small. I have no prior criminal record, and the police officer didn't arrest me when I was pulled over.

If anyone knows Massachusetts traffic law, could you please tell me whether or not judges usually impose the jail sentence on a first-time offender? Or if they tend to just give a fine and/or perhaps community service?

Thanks!

Oops, my mistake. Violating Chapter 90 Section 10 means that the worst that can happen to me if convicted is a $100 fine. The $500-$1000 fine/10 days of jail time is for driving while your license is SUSPENDED or REVOKED. Many thanks to the lawyers I spoke to about this!
