Hey all,
I'm 17 and live in Illinois. This is egregious, and Im embarassed to admit this, but I got a ticket for doing 73 in a 35 MPH zone. This is my first ticket, and I've been driving for 8 months. My court date is two weeks from today, so I've been trying to research and find out what I should expect as a punishment et al, so the Illinois DMV and Secretary of States site have been my most useful. Here's my concern: (aside from the inevitable insurance increases) I fear a license suspension. The DMV website goes into rather vague detail on the "points" system, and I classify as 50. Equal to this number of points (50) is a 3 months suspension. The paragraph before the points makes it sound, however, that suspension is normally invoked over suspensions (plural), so I'm not sure what to think. On the Sec of States site, my violation does not fall under the list, and to my relief, states that 2 traffic tickets are required within a 24 month period (for those under the age of 21) to receive a suspension. Any thoughts? What should I expect? Thanks. |

Yes it could be suspended. You should get counsel to help you appear in court and negotiate a solution at this point. You don't want to lose that license.

Thanks for responding.
I looked at the "real" Illinois DMV rules and laws, and under suspensions, once again, I didn't see a mentioning of 1 "egregious" violation, just two regular "moving" violations (for those under 21). Is the final decision (The suspension) entirely up to the judge, or does the DMV (Who apparently sets the standards) have an influence with precedent? And have you heard of a single-speeding-ticket result in a suspension before? Many thanks! Any by counsel, would you advise bringing a lawyer to court? The judge can decide yes.
A lawyer would best help resolve this for you and may help keep it from becoming a suspension |
