Default Back Taxes

How far back can the IRS collect taxes? I filed taxes for the years 1995-97 but couldnt pay at the time. I have filed the last two years married but only my spouse had income.I am now employed and will show income this year what will happen when I file I know my spouse is not liable for my past taxes. Also I filed bankruptcy in 1998 but these taxes were not included.
