Default Back Personal Prop Taxes Due Not Mine

I started a new restaurant in Michigan, Oakland County. I am renting a space that I just learned had Delinquent Personal Property Taxes from the year before I arrived. We are being asked to pay since we are in the facility or the County will come in and take equipment equal to the value of the tax and auction it off. What are my legal options? I have called the County to discuss, they tell me as long as I can prove the items in my resturant are mine they cant take anything, yet I am visited by a Deputy Treasurer that states he can take what he wants. Thanks for any advise you have.
