EEK! va education for hubby who owes irs

Help. My hubby owes the irs back taxes adding up to over $6000.00. He has had a hard time getting work in his type of business here in a rural area and is in need of a new skill.

He recently applied for a fafsa college grant and was turned down because of his irs debt. In a perfect setting, He would have been okayed to get college training under the Veteran's administration as my dependent. (I am a 100% disabled veteran and my dependents have quite a few benefits.)

Since the irs does not turn him down for medical benefits what can we do about this other thing? Do you think that he could ask for them to take some of the money from his grant and/or scholarships? I cannot afford to pay for anything else outside of the bills (which in itself daunting).

The school that he has applied for online courses is called: Phoenix. It seems like a great school and it could help him to move into a job where he does not have to handle the money and have minimal contact with other people. It would be great for us both to start over and not have to look over our shoulders.

Since I am disabled and the bills and bankruptcy were before I came on to the scene I am only worried that the irs will make it harder for me to take care of my family.

Have you written them to discuss it in detail and show what he wants to do? Normally they will work out something for you if you push the issue enough?
