Default IRS letter to "extend the time to assess tax"

I got a letter from IRS to audit our 2005 income tax.
Now I recieved a letter to \"extend the time to assess tax\" Does this mean that the \"statute of limitations\" has expired. If we don\'t sign it what are the ramifications.

You do not need to sign. They will extend it themselves if need be.
