Sole proprietors, partners, independent contractor?

For the past year, my mother has been a sole proprietor offering alternative healing services (energy healing) under a fictitious business name. Recently, she closed the physical structure of her business and her bank account is at $0 and is in good standing. She has significant debt on her personal credit cards, which she sometimes used for business.
