We co-own a dog with a couple who live in Ohio. The dog was having health issues so they gave her to me to take and have her x-rays taken at MSU. The x-rays showed the dog has elbow dysplasia and will need extensive surgery. When I told them this, they emailed me and said that if I want her, I can have her and they will sign off. They did not want to deal with all of the time and work her surgery and rehab was going to need. Two days later, they have changed their mind and are demanding the dog back. We are both on the dog's papers as being owners. They are in Ohio and we are in Michigan, can they now change their mind and demand her back after saying that they gave her to me?
Thank you! April |

Re: Need help with dog co-ownership
I also have a signed contract with this couple. I am listed as the seller breeder. In the contract it states that "The buyer promises to respect the condition of this contract and the the seller breeder has the right to retakes possession of this puppy (without reimbursement) if it is neglected, mistreated, or submitted to living conditions that are too difficult to endure, possibly causing physical or mental strain". They have neglected this puppy. She has had this condition and been in severe pain for over a year, and despite being told to get her x-rayed they have not. As a result of this going so long without treatment, she has developed degenerative joint disease. She also has been kept in a crate almost 24/7 and has no muscle tone. Two orthopedic specialists have looked at her and stated that the lack of muscle tone is so severe that her hip sockets are loose. They have also breached their contract be refusing to do a basic obedience class with this puppy, which is also required.
If they choose to pursue this in civic court, will they need to come to Michigan to file? |

i have recently split up with my girlfriend, and we adopted a dog while we were together. She has gone back on her word to share the dog, and now is completely avoiding me. She will not allow me to see the dog, so I would like to summons her to appear in court, and negociate shared custody. How do i go about doing this, and what paper work do I need to show co-ownership?

You can write up exactly that and seek an order.
Often however the court is just going to try to decide who is the real owner. |

Question? I am the owner of a ***** I bought and he is the co-owner. ***** was breed to my stud dog and had a litter of pups. We agreed he could have the pic, but he decided he didn't want a pup. I registered the litter. The papers came back with him as a co-owner of this litter. At this time he is being a horses butt about sending the papers back so they can be registered to their new owners.
I want to know why AKC had him on the litter as a co-owner? I also want to know if there is a way to register each puppy without his signature? Any suggestions. Thanks |

You could if need be file in court to enforce your agreement but it would seem he is included because he is a co-owner of the dog.

I have a question about what is referred to as "papers" here. I am trying desperately to be listed as co-owner of a dog (my dog) after my fiance left me along with the dog and papers that list him as owner (he bought the dog, as a present to me, but his name is on license, medical records, etc). I keep hearing from the vet hospital and city hall that a dog can only have one owner - so what papers do people mean here when they're talking about co-ownership? Please help if you know of a solution.
