Confused loaned bike stolen, my resposability or hers?

I loaned my bike to a friend of a friend. she left it outside her apartment, and it was stolen.

she was obviously very upset when she called to tell me. i later received an email from her proposing that she pay me back by reimbursing me for the replacement. i replaced the bike ($2500) and now she has refused to honor her proposal. stating that its "my fault" for loaning her a bike that was too expensive for her to pay for a possible loss. i did not disclose the value of the bike to her, therefor i am at fault?

do i have a claim or did i just loose my bike?

Normally she is responsible once it is in her care. But that does seem quite expensive--to the point where you often would have had it insured no?

well...yes, and no. 2500 isn't a REALLY expensive bike. high end, but not a competition bike by any means. i do have home owners, but i really don't see the point in raising my "risk factor" with my insurance company over 2500 bucks. plus the deductible is 1500. all of this hassle makes me feel like its my fault and responsibility when it should be hers. thats the issue for me.

im asking her one more time to step up and be a good person, and pay for her poor decision.

the back-up plan is small claims. just want to know if i have a legit claim.
