Default Marina slip rental issue......

A marina owner called the first week of May and asked if I would like to rent a slip for the summer to store my boat. I told him yes, I was interested, but I would not be able to rent until June 1st because I was already at another marina. He never sent me a contract, but sent a bill which was higher than I expected (being that the first 2 months of the boating season had passed). I e-mailed him and cancelled, citing a better deal from my current marina. Now he wants me to pay him rental fees for the month of May, even though we never used his marina, never had a contract with him or his marina, and had our boat stored at another marina under contract. Basically this person believes I owe him rental money just because I told him I was interested in renting a slip, even though I cancelled in writing with him before June 1st. Also, the money he seeks from me is $492, what he says is 1 month of slip rental. Although the credit I would have received on the billing statement for missing April and May was only $150.

Can I still be found responsible for oweing this money, even though we had no contract and I never used his marina?

It would be best to for you to simply say that no agreement ever was finally reached--which appears to be the case basically.
