Default Claim against Dentist

Current situation:

My dentist did 2 root canals on my teeth this year (1 of which he did w/o asking me) and wanted to do more procedures, so I got a 2nd opinion. The dentist told me the crowns were placed incorrectly and gave me the xrays for proof. I went back to the original dentist and showed him the xrays and asked him for a refund. He gladly wrote me a check for 1950. When I cashed the check, the check BOUNCED and I got a $10 fee. I went back to the office and asked for the total sum in a cashier's check. The dentist has not called me back and the secretary keeps telling me he's busy. I have written a letter asking for the sum and have threatened to take him to court if he doesn't pay up. I understand this is a small claim's issue, but is there more I can do about this? I am going to contact the dental assocation.
