Confused Mutual Property in a Separation

I was not married to this man, but we dated and owned a house together. After our separation, he bought me out on the house and I moved out. My parents had given us a digital camera for Christmas - I took it when I left. His mom had given us paintings for Christmas - I left them as they were from his parents. He is now suing me for the camera. Do I need a lawyer when I go to court? What is a judge most likely to do? Did I have a right to take the camera? Who has legal ownership?

If it was a gift to both of you, you technically have to split it and one pay half.
