My mother has always basically been in charge of my money, any expenses I have from my apartment, school, etc. she has delt with. I've never had a problem with it before and any money I transfered in was always used for my expences. Resently I transfered money that I had in the bank into my mothers account under the same understanding, that it was my money being used towards my expenses. I recently asked her to transfer that money back into my account so I can start deciding where my money goes since I've decided not to go back to school this year. Now she's decided that she's keeping it as back payment for the money that she's invested into my education. From what I understand she can't just make up a contract and keep the money because she doesn't agree with the choices I've made.... Is there anything I can do? |

My suggestion is that if you want to be financially independent that you start handling your own financial matters. Pay your OWN expenses with your own money thru your own bank account. And say "thank you" to your mother for helping with those education expenses. While I don't agree that she should have taken money intended to pay for your expenses and applied it towards her investment in your education, I also don't agree that it would be a sensible idea to try and sue your mother for taking care of your future for you. If you are an adult, it's time you started taking care of your own finances anyway, don't you think? (And perhaps that is what your mother is trying to tell you through her actions.) |
