Confused barter, transfer of goods

I was renting a house from a private landlord. Our lease ended on 6-7-09, there was a balance of $221 for the first week of june. My landlord agreed to accept a lawmower, hedge trimmer, and a weed eaterfor the balance. She sent me a letter on 6-16-09 sshowing the details of the trade and stating "which will end our lease agreement." Now on 7-10-09 i recieved a letter from her stating that the goods were nonfunctional. She threw away the weed eater, took the mower to a repair shop which requires $120 to get back, and she is asking for the $221. Am i resonsible to pay the $221 not recieve any of the goods back.

Sorry for these circumstances. Without knowing your state it is difficult to answer. However, generally based on what you have shared here you would have no such liability to the former landlord. You bartered for the goods without a written warranty, which is the usual case in used goods transactions. The landlord would bear the burden of going to small claims court and getting a judgment against you. It sounds like that effort would fail, and given the amount at stake it could well cost more to pursue the case than to just drop the matter. Hope it works out. AJJ
