Ex-girlfriend wants to take car

I live in Texas, and my ex-girlfriend and I bought a car together in another state, where we used to live, she helped with some of the cost. And we paid with a certified check from her account. The vehicle was put solely under a family member's name. Same as insurance. There was no other written or verbal agreement. Now that we are no longer together, she wants the car, and she argues that since she "paid" for it, she can take it, or she's entitled to the amount she contributed for the purchase. Is this true? Please advice me.

You both own it...and if two or more owners or partners cannot agree on what to do with a piece of property such as a car, they may petition the court and the court will order a sale or refinancing etc. so that the one or more may get out of the property and/or the other(s) may keep it etc.--it is often done-- (This is true in some cases even for equitable owners that have paid various amounts etc., but for various reasons, may not be listed as owner. You have to argue it was intended that you are an owner as well under your original oral or written agreement) -- You could threaten to take this action if need be. It may cause compromise which is of course what you need here now.
