sold a car that was unsafe

i just bought a jeep yesterday from a private seller and when we called the number of a service station sticker inside the window they told us that they told him the vehicle was unsafe to be divin on the road. ie. seats are broke brakes are shot, airbag is broken/missing. all of which are currently still broke on the vehicle. is this guy in violation of any law or do i have any leverage to get my $$ back? he refused to let me test drive the vehicle before the title was changed. and as soon as i drove away i realized something was wrong.

im just wondering since he knew in advance that this vehicle had serious safety issues and sold it without disclosing anything. he also lied and said it had a new engine installed 10,000 miles ago and the motor mounts are seriously rusted and rotted away which leads us to believe the engine swap never happened.
