Default Overtime work

Here is the question. I am a TV photographer/Editor. I was told when I was hired that I would be working a 40 hour week. I was told I was exempt, I am not sure if my job can be exempt? And also I am working alot more then 40 hours some weeks and am forced to work on weekend or lose my job. I live in CT
