Default Payroll deferred

I am in California I have recently been informed that due to our companies economic hardships as a result of some things going on in the industry we cater to, that my salary may be cut by 20% and paid back to me when the situation is resolved. This may be for an indefinite period of time. This means I will be making less than what my starting pay was when I joined the company 5 years ago. I'm sure this is legal, but the only information I can find about this is when it's an agreement between employee/employer and it usually involves retirement plans.

Are there any limits to length of time or amount that can be deferred?

Any information anyone can tell me about this would be appreciated.

Default Re: Payroll deferred

They can do it as long as they want if you agree.

But only as to future work not past work.

You can of course quit too.
