stolen work property
my car was broken in to, property from my work was stolen. my employer wants me to pay for the missing property. is that legal? i did sign a contract that states that I am responsible for the property but there are no specific dollar amounts included (no promissory note was signed).

At first thought, the contract puts company property under your supervision and property. If it is stolen because it is left in a vehicle (laptop for instance) then they can hold you responsible for the theft. Take a look at the contract you were provided, it should tell you the specifics of what will happen if it is destroyed, lost, or stolen.
