Default Land gifted to us

We bought a cottage from my father-in-law in 1994. He owned the rest of the farm. He gave us extra land to increase the size of our garden which we fenced in. We have since planted trees and hedging, the fence still stands. We have photographic evidence of the new boundary going back 10 years. We never asked for the deeds to be changed as we trusted our parents. Now my father-in-law has died and my mother-in-law states the land is not ours. Do we have any rights? Please advise
