Confused Trying to buy MY house

I live in Mississippi.
My husband and I have been paying for a house for the past 8 years.
We were young when we got married, and could not get approved for a loan on a house we wanted to buy. My father-in-law WAS approved for the loan. Everyone we know, knows that it is our house and we are paying for it. We missed few payments over the past 8 years and my father-in law paid them, thinking my husband would pay him back. He did not, and my husband and I are separated. I live in the house at the moment, and my father-in-law has since mentioned it being a rental. I think he fears we will get a divorce and I will try to take the house. Do I have any legal rights to the house, since I have witnesses who can vouch that He has said it is our house and we are buying it? I want to get something signed by a notary saying it is rent to own. Is there anything I can do to force him to do so?

You could always threaten to sue over the payments etc. but normally any real estate agreement needs to be in writing. You should try to get it confirmed even now.

Is there any way I can get a hearing before a judge to force him to sign something if he refuses to? I have everyone we know who can confirm it is OUR house.....

I would suggest you have a lawyer involved as it is not the easiest point to argue if nothing is in writing.
