IRC 170 states that charitable and governmental volunteers are reimbursed at a charitable mileage rate of 17 cents per mile; however, that is not the general practice of most major denominations: Methodist, Baptists, Catholics, Presbyterians, Nazarenes, Pentecostals, etc. etc. Most of the religious organizations reimburse their elected board members on the standard business mile rate of (last year 48.5 cents per mile). I want to know why so many of the denominations reimburse according to standard business miles rather than the charitable mile rate. Does anyone know the Revenue Rulings which may apply to this? Any thoughts on this subject?
