Help with starting an improved proper PTO
First of all, thanks to anyone who can give me advise to the following:
We are coming to the end of the school year, and the PTO has elected 5 Brand new officers for the following year. . . .we are taking over for women who have been doing this for years, but I do not believe that they really new what they were doing (when it came to keeping records up to date). The more research I do on PTO's, the more nervous I am getting. I cannot find anyone who knows exactly when our original PTO was formed; the only thing that I know in my research is that their EIN # is no longer valid (and I have no idea for how long it has not been valid). I know that we have to call and get a new EIN number so that we can apply to be tax exempt (otherwise, we cannot apply for grants). My question is . . . Since we have to apply for a new EIN number, and our bylaws are way too general and old, should we just start a new PTO group to set ourselves apart from the old group that we had nothing to do with (none of the new officers have been part of the PTO before). Is there some legal verbage that we should use to set us apart from the old PTO (I figure that we would have to change the name somewhat). Also, there will be some money left over (not much) from the old PTO; should we set it up where the old PTO donates their money to the new PTO and then dissolve the old PTO? Please help . . . I am really tryin to cover our new officers' butts, and we really want to make sure we do this properly and as quickly as possible so that we can start working on getting more for the school kids. Thanks a bunch . . .sorry if this sounds all too crazy.
