Question Tree roots (Who pays?)

(Massachusetts)
My neighbor informed me that roots from one of the trees on my property are causing her patio to buckle.
She told me she has already contacted a tree service to come and cut the tree down, and she expects me to pay for it.
First off, the tree is strong and healthy and gives my yard shade and privacy so I don't want it cut down.
And second, even if I agreed to let her cut the tree down, am I the one who has to pay for it?
I was thinking she should pay to have the roots cut back since they are on her property and leave the rest of the tree alone?
Who is legally responsible for damage that the roots are causing?
I know I am asking alot of questions but I just want to have info before I discuss this with her further.
Thank you.

She normally has to pay to have the roots cut and can only do so back to her property line; she can install a block or plate to stop them from coming back.

Confused Re: Tree roots (Who pays?)

I live in a mobile home park and have planted ficus treesup to the edge of my property line. The roots of the trees have gone into my neighbors driveway and have done damage. I have spent $350 on my property side installing a root blocker. I do not feel I am responsible for anything past my own property line (i.e. her driveway). Is that correct?chqnn

That normally is correct. They can dig down and destroy the roots or do as they wish on their side.
