Question school fence and trees

My family bought this house new 48 years ago. The elementary school backs into the property. About 45 years back the city fenced in the school yard running along our back property line with an 8ft fence. Recently the city gave me a warning to trim the trees growing in and over the fence on the school side. I don't feel this is my responsibility but I don't want to get ticketed and fined. What do I do?

Then the fence is yours, take it down.
