Default American repatriating with children

I am not sure whether this falls into Immigration or Family law. I am an American citizen residing in the UK. I have two children by an British citizen to whom I am currently married with no separation agreement or divorce pending or in place. I would like to take my children back to the US to file for divorce as I have no means of physical, financial or emotional support here in the UK. My children have their US citizen born abroad certificates, as well as US passports. Can I just take them to the US permanently? I have consulted lawyers here but they can only advise on UK law for residents. I am totally alone here and while I don't fear my husband, he's a drinker and not always rational. He's very emotional, and I'm afraid if I try to leave him and stay in the country, something unpleasant may happen to us. He is currently applying for his residency to move to the US as well. I don't want to deny him custody, I am a full time mother and want to stay that way.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I hope this is clear, its difficult to simplify the situation, but the main question I would like answered is: Can I repatriate without the childrens' father if they are American as well.

Thank you in advance.

World Law's lawyers could also probably help resolve this if need be. You may email them on the home page.
