Do I qualify for Citizenship in UK???
Hi, my name is Dan, I live in Nashville, Tennessee, United States and I am researching a possible claim for Dual Citizenship as a US citizen and British citizen. I have read quite a bit on different sites but I wanted to get clarification. I will enclose the details below. If you would read them and give me a professional answer it would be much appreciated:
I was born on September 30, 1981 in the city of Oxford, Oxfordshire, England to 2 US citizens. It was at the John Radcliffe Hospital there that I was born. My father was in England stationed at the old Upper Hayford US Military base that was located there working for the US Air Force at the time. My mother is an American that had been in England and married and met my father while there. She was living with him when I was born in the village of Upper Hayford. From what I was able to gather from the citizenship laws that I found, it would seem that I would qualify for citizenship if I am interpreting the laws correctly. I found "Before 1983, birth in the UK was sufficient in itself to confer British nationality irrespective of the status of parents, with an exception only for children of diplomats and enemy aliens. This exception did not apply to most visiting forces, so, in general, children born in the UK before 1983 to visiting military personnel (eg US forces stationed in the UK) are British citizens by birth." If I understand correctly, under the concept of lex soli that I would qualify since I was born before the reform laws went into effect in 1983. If this is in fact the case, I would like some detail as to what I would need to claim my citizenship under these pretenses. I appreciate any feedback or help that you could provide me with on this matter. Can anyone provide information or difinitive answers for me??!?? Thank you for your help and attention |

Did you receive a response to your post about dual citizenship in England and US? I was born on the same US Air Force Base in 1982 and have been wondering the same question.

I was born in 1986 to my USAF parents at Upper Heyford also and have been searching for the same answer. I live in Memphis, TN btw. If you were born in the UK previous to 1983 you are automatically a british citizen by birth.
