Law firm loses $1m in alleged office supply scam

A purchasing specialist at the high-powered Palo Alto law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati helped a San Francisco office supplier defraud the company of some $1 million through fake purchases of index tab dividers, federal prosecutors said Thursday.

According to an indictment filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, John Masakazu Tashiro conspired with top employees at Attorneys Printing Supply from 2002 to 2006 to place dozens of purchase orders that were never filled. APS President Carlos Ivan Vargas Sr. and accounting manager Daniel Jose Dominguez allegedly billed Wilson Sonsini for the fictitious dividers and kicked some of the proceeds back to Tashiro.

The three are facing charges of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering. They are scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in San Jose on Oct. 8.
