Default Identity Theft within family?

My sister recently split from her live-in boyfriend, with whom she has a 2 year old child.

She subsequently discovered that this boyfriend/father had fraudulently obtained a credit card in HER name and racked up a large debt, which he is not able / willing to pay.

Is this considered identity theft, even though they are technically 'family'? (Although they are not married).

I'd love some advice as to what her options are at this point, thanks!

I had a similar situation and a friend told me that I should get protected by an identity theft protection company. I did a great deal of research and found a company that is run by professionals with law enforcement experience --
I now sleep peacefully knowing that nobody can get my identity.

That's a great idea, however in this case it's obviously a bit too late. I'm wondering what recourse she may have in this POST theft situation?

Filing a police report is possible, but obviously throwing the father of your child in jail isn't necessarily the best option, if there ARE any other options.

I looked up your ShieldSafe and it along with all the others offers the same protection unless i'm missing something. Shieldsafe is only 49 dollars though. Am I missing something, it looks comparable to the rest.

99 percent of all the services Identity theft protection companies issue are the same. The main service from all these companies is to place a check with the 3 credit bureaus. And yes, including Shieldsafe, these companies are identical in what they do to combat identity theft. 49.95 for the year is a great price and it should be mentioned that some of these companies are charging waaaaaay too much, like Lifelock and TrustedID. Shieldsafe apparently just reduced their price recently though, and it will be very interesting to see how the other companies will compete with this.

Yes, thinking if you hold back from prosecuting his theft by deception, fraud and ID theft will not help he or the child. Eventually he will get into far worse action and end up doing more time than for this, the time to stop trends that are wrongful is at the onset and it takes action, not fear. Lay the wood to the slimball and do not look back. He is no father and I would not recognize him as such. He was a mistake and remedy is needed now. It is easier to stop the spead of cancer earlier, than once it manifests into the brain. The mind will only go to higher degrees of abuse and disrepect. This guy is a scumbag whom walked on the mother of his own child. In all of this country these are the types who need a prison cell as this crime has a victim, unlike say possession of pot of some other ridiculous commercial crime listed in the CFR such as Title 27 Chapter 17. 11 which states in short form "All crime is commerce" (a Federal scam). You need to act and do something as he will only get worse and someday it may influence the child more that you will know, so do something or else condon the wrong and live with it for life....not such a great act to condon so good luck if you do.

Best regards,
