Default Dog left in car 1 hour now Class 1 Misdemeanor

My son left his dog in the car for an hour while visiting a friend. (Neighbors hated friend and had been trying to get her evicted.) Temp in mid 40's at 10 AM. Was cited by Animal Control and had to go to court. Now looking at $2,000 fine, 6 mos. jail and 3 years probation for a Class 1 Misdemeanor. Seeing prosecutor in a few days. Any suggestions for this ridiculous situation?
