Default spouse lost pension of deceased husband

My Father in Law passed away. He had a pension but did not leave his
surviving wife as the beneficiary. He did not leave anyone as a
beneficiary of the pension. This was due to ignorance. They were married for 30 years. She was married to him while he paid into the pension. She worked and contributed to the household budget for that period of time, while he
put money away for the pension. He just died two weeks ago. We called his
pension and they told us that the pension will cease due to the fact
that he did not have his wife as the beneficiary, or anyone else as the
beneficiary
