Consensual relations with a minor

I am 16 years old, and my boyfriend is 19. I don’t want him to get in any legal trouble, so I need to know the boundaries of our relationship. I have looked through many legal websites, but the only information I can find is pertaining to an adult with a child under age 16, or under age 12. I love my boyfriend, and I want to do what will be best for our futures.

You normally should not have sexual relations until you are 18.

I realize this, so we are not having sex. The problem is that my mom has all of a sudden realized he is 19 and now she is saying, after 7 months of us dating, that I should breakup with him because if we get "caught" he will be labeled as a child molester and the rest of his life will be ruined. I want to know what the laws are regarding our situation to know if she is speaking the truth. If the rest of his life would be ruined because of my selfishness I would break up with him, but I don’t want to cause either of us unnecessary pain.
