Default Problem buying car

My girlfriend just purchased a car in California. She got some paper work from the guy but when she went to register the car she found out that she needed some more. She went tonight to talk to the guy and found out he is now in jail. She needs this car like in a week or so or she will end up losing her job. Is there anyway that she can talk to the guy or go to his house with a police officer or something to be able to get the paper work she needs?

Yes she can ask the police to escort her--explain the situation.
