Default Landlord Tenant question

Our prior apartment complex sent us to an collection agency and we have
be moved out of there for two months. We recieved a bill in the mail and
are asked for the amount in full, but our apartment complex never mailed us
a bill or and itemized documetation requesting payment or gave us a phone
call to inform us we needed to pay. We left a forwarding address and did not
recieve anything in the mail. What do you suggest we do?
