Default Abandoned auto; My roommate passed away without a will

My roommate passed away 2 years ago (in Tennessee) leaving a vehicle that she had last driven in 2000. The last tags on the vehicle were from NJ. She died without a will or family. Can i get the car titled to either restore it or to sell it outright?

Short answer: NO. If there is no will, no family and no heirs to inherit her property, it must be turned over to the state. It's not a "finders keeper" kind of situation where you can just take it and keep it now. It doesn't belong to you.

I wish to inform you that if a person dies without a Will, it is called dying intestate. There are Tennessee Statutes which direct how assets pass under intestacy. If there is no family under the statutes the property would pass to the State of Tennessee. The abandoned auto will pass to the State of Tennessee.
