Confused disgusted with vacation home

My family recently vacationed on a lake for a week in Wisconsin in a rental home. Total price for the week @ $2,700. Paid half up front, signed no contract. Many things were very disappointing. Rust in water ruined clothing. Bunkhouse for kids smelled like wet dog and urine, therefore unusable. Dirty dishes. Dead bugs and webs in windows. Leaking toilets. Cigarette butts and bottle caps on property, not good for small kids. Advertised a kids play area and there was none. Neighbor even complained about the owner of the house! After the week was over, we sent the man 500 more dollars and wrote in a letter a list of things that were not acceptable, therefore we were not going to pay the full remainder. He emailed back and said he was filing in court on Monday. help! I have never had a legal issue before! Is he bluffing? Should I pay?

It is permitted to break the short-term lease (or e.g. sue for the decreased lease value in small claims) if they have failed to comply with the lease and/or
there are health, noise, dirt or safety concerns--but save all information,
evidence etc. and take photos etc. for the small claims court. Based on what you say here the concerns would seem
valid, and frankly the conditions may not even meet code compliance--those would be reasons to cancel.
